Theodore Ushev to Showcase 'Light Boxes' Adaptation at Venice Production Bridge

Theodore Ushev, a Bulgarian filmmaker recognized for his Oscar-nominated animated short “Blind Vaysha,” is currently in the pre-production phase of his latest project, an adaptation of Shane Jones’ novel “Light Boxes.” The film is set to be presented at the Venice Production Bridge’s Gap-Financing Market, which runs from September 3 to September 7, 2026.

“Light Boxes,” originally published in 2009, has garnered a cult following due to its unique narrative style and thematic depth. Ushev's adaptation aims to translate the novel's surreal and poignant exploration of seasonal affective disorder into a cinematic experience. The filmmaker’s previous works have been noted for their innovative animation techniques and compelling storytelling.

The Venice Production Bridge serves as a platform for creators to seek financial backing and foster collaborations within the industry. Ushev’s participation highlights the ongoing interest in adapting literary works for the screen, as well as the potential for animated features to engage with complex themes in contemporary cinema.
