FCC Grants Approval for Reflect Orbital’s Light-Reflecting Satellite

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved Reflect Orbital's Earendil-1 satellite, which is designed to test a novel technology aimed at reflecting sunlight back to Earth after sunset. Measuring 60 feet by 60 feet, the satellite will utilize a thin-film mirror to direct light towards the planet's surface.

This initial approval permits the deployment of the Earendil-1 as a test unit, with the goal of assessing its capacity to illuminate an area approximately three miles wide on the ground. The satellite's reflective capabilities have raised concerns among some astronomers, who worry about the potential impact on astronomical observations and the night sky.

Reflect Orbital intends for the satellite to serve as a demonstration of its technology, which could have implications for various applications, including urban lighting and emergency response in areas without reliable electrical infrastructure.
