Improvised refugee camps filled with children and families mark the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. As fear of reprisals drives nearly half a million people to France, the situation overwhelms the French Government. Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, then serving as consul in Spain, persuades the President of Chile to rescue over two thousand refugees. The film centers on Julia, a young girl who escapes Barcelona with her father, a widower. They board the Winnipeg, a ship chartered by Neruda, seeking safety from a grim future in Europe. As Julia and her father embark on this perilous journey, they become part of a larger narrative of survival and hope. The film illustrates the challenges faced by those fleeing war and the humanitarian efforts that sought to provide refuge.
