The Ungrateful Tenant

Description

Auckland in 2026 serves as the setting for "The Ungrateful Tenant," where an anxiety-ridden millennial renter yearns to escape the housing crisis that plagues his life. Frustrated by his living situation, he takes drastic action by evicting his troublesome flatmate, believing this will resolve his issues. However, his decision backfires, leading him on a chaotic path through various flats across the city, marked by misfortune and irony. The film employs a black-and-white aesthetic reminiscent of the German expressionist silent era, contrasting the modern challenges of urban living with stylistic choices from the past. The cast includes Conor Bowden, Tim Earl, Conan Hayes, and Carmel McGlone, who bring to life a narrative steeped in the absurdities of contemporary rent struggles. As the protagonist faces instant karma, the film presents a comedic yet pointed commentary on the realities of renting and homeownership in a city defined by its century-old bungalows.
