Squel – Confessions of a Carnaval Queen
Description
After retiring from her role as a flag-bearer in 2022, Squel Jorgea seeks to reclaim her place in Rio’s Carnival, facing the challenge of returning to the demanding physicality of the dance after years away. Having spent over twenty years in the spotlight, including eleven seasons with Grande Rio and representing both Mangueira and Portela, she draws on her extensive experience to prepare for a performance inspired by the book "Um Defeito de Cor." This narrative resonates deeply with her personal experiences as a single mother and an artist. As she trains for the upcoming Carnival, Squel's dance evolves into a powerful act of resistance and a celebration of Afro-Brazilian culture. The film highlights her journey of rediscovery, emphasizing both the struggles and strengths that define her life. Ultimately, Squel is left confronting the realities of her past and the expectations of her future, poised on the brink of a performance that could redefine her legacy in the world of samba.
