Red Wave
Description
The coastline from Yeosu to Busan becomes a focal point as the film examines events surrounding the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident in 1948. Soldiers stationed in Yeosu resisted orders to suppress the Jeju 4·3 uprising, leading to a violent crackdown by the Rhee Syngman government, which resulted in numerous civilian deaths. Through interviews and archival footage, the film traces the impact of state violence during this tumultuous period, highlighting how the sea served as a silent witness to the unfolding tragedy. As the narrative progresses, the film also addresses the aftermath of the Korean War, when the government labeled members of the National Guidance Alliance as communists and initiated widespread massacres across the nation. This exploration of the events emphasizes the connection between historical incidents and their lingering effects on communities along the coast. The film invites reflection on the enduring scars left by these historical actions.
