Out Laws

Description

Friedel Dausab, a gay activist from Namibia, files a landmark lawsuit against his government in June 2022, challenging the criminalisation of same-sex love in his country. The film documents his legal fight while detailing the dangers he faces, including death threats and public hostility. Alongside fellow activists from Sri Lanka and Barbados, he travels to London, where moments of protest and Pride intersect with their struggle for equality. The documentary also investigates the colonial origins of queer criminalisation, tracing its impact from Tudor England to the Global South, reinforced by Christian evangelism. By intertwining the present-day legal battle with historical context, it highlights the resilience and courage of LGBTQIA+ individuals and the ongoing quest for safety and justice. The cast includes Friedel Dausab and Rosanna Flamer-Caldera.
