Imperium
Description
The film follows a group of Italian filmmakers as they document life in the Soviet Union between 1970 and 1973, aiming to reveal the diverse cultures and communities existing within the regime's attempts at homogenization. Utilizing exclusively archival footage, the documentary captures scenes from nomadic encampments in Central Asia to the iconic Red Square, as well as remote villages in the Caucasus and the far reaches of the Far East. Through this visual collection, "Imperium" presents a multifaceted view of Soviet society, contrasting the starkness of political control with the richness of local traditions and practices. The film moves briskly from one setting to another, offering moments of levity in the midst of darker realities, ultimately showcasing the resilience of cultural identities in a time of oppression.
