Haje
Description
The film "Haje" documents the conflict surrounding the abandoned village of Haje, where nearly all residents have departed due to government pressure, except for Jeon Jin-hyeon, who resists eviction by the Ministry of National Defense. The story centers on a 600-year-old hackberry tree, which faces destruction from the expansion of a U.S. military base. Peace activists, alongside filmmaker Hwang Yun, rally to protect both the tree and the village. Over the course of five years, the activists hold the monthly Paeng Paeng Cultural Festival, using it as a platform for their cause. As military equipment arrives at the base, they emphasize the significance of Haje and the tree as symbols of peace. Ultimately, their efforts lead to the tree's designation as a national heritage site, highlighting the ongoing struggle for preservation in the face of military expansion. The events take place in 2018.
