Gentle by Birth

Gentle by Birth

2026•Documentary

Description

Doree Simon Hatfield looks for answers after her 23-year-old brother dies of an overdose. She sets out to identify what kept him from receiving treatment and support, and she records conversations with family members as she traces the personal and institutional obstacles that followed his death. The film follows Hatfield as she moves beyond the family living room to talk with people on the front lines of drug policy and care. She visits harm reduction sites, spends time at music festivals where drug use and peer support intersect, and brings questions into public spaces where addiction policy is negotiated. Those locations provide concrete points of inquiry rather than abstractions. Gentle by Birth is presented as a 2026 documentary that documents those meetings and the material questions they raise about access to services and public perception. The cast includes Carl Hart, Maia Szalavitz, Kassandra Frederique and Bethany Hallam; their appearances are part of Hatfield’s on-camera reporting and interviews rather than fictionalized scenes. On camera, Hatfield speaks with medical professionals, harm reduction workers, advocates and policy makers in the Pennsylvania Capitol. The film records these exchanges, including discussions about changes to treatment protocols, syringe exchange and naloxone distribution, and legislative debates that shape what services are available at the local level. As she gathers testimony and evidence, Hatfield’s personal position on drugs changes. The documentary shows her confronting her own fear and stigma; at a point in the film she elects to try drugs herself as a deliberate part of the inquiry. That decision converts the project from a standard investigative record into a provocative, first-person experiment that raises questions about boundaries between reporter and subject. The presence of home recordings and family conversations keeps the inquiry rooted in specific domestic consequences. Scenes in the family living room record arguments, accusations and attempts at consolation; they document how questions about blame, responsibility and mourning are handled within the household as the public inquiry continues. Alongside the legal and medical strand of Hatfield’s investigation, Gentle by Birth follows the collateral story of family healing. The film tracks how her investigative choices affect relatives’ attempts to recover after the death, and how those private dynamics are influenced by the public conversations she starts.
